Yang Zhenning is famous as one of the most influential physicists of the 21st century. Born in 1922 in China, Yang Zhenning grew up during a time of social change and national uncertainty. These early experiences shaped not only his career path, but also his understanding of the role that science plays in society.
In the 1940s, Yang studied physics at Southwest Associated University, one of the most important universities in China at that time. It provided him with a good base in physics. Later, he went to the USA to continue his studies. There, he worked very hard and made great achievements in physics. In 1957, Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize in Physics together with another physicist, Tsung-Dao Lee. They received the prize for their discovery about parity violation (宇称不守恒), which changed people’s understanding of the laws of nature. At that time, Yang was only 35 years old, making him one of the youngest Nobel winners in Physics.
Although Yang lived and worked in the USA for many years, he always cared deeply about China. He paid close attention to the development of science education in his home country. In his later years, Yang returned to China and worked at Tsinghua University. He hoped to help young Chinese students learn more about science and think independently (独立地). Instead of asking students to simply remember facts, he encouraged them to question and examine (检验) what’s already accepted. He suggested that the value of knowledge lies not only in the discovery itself, but also in how it is shared and used.
Yang Zhenning is gone yet he’ll be remembered forever—not only for his science knowledge, but for his contributions (贡献) to education and his strong sense of duty to society.

On a hot afternoon after a thunder storm, in Maycomb, other kids were having fun swimming in the river. But Scout and her brother Jem sat on their porch, watching Atticus Finch, their father, return home from work. Atticus was a quiet lawyer with gentle eyes, and he always answered his children’s questions patiently, no matter how silly they seemed.
That day, Scout asked, “Atticus, why do people in town talk about you defending (辩护) Tom Robinson? They say it’s a bad thing.” Atticus put down his newspaper and looked at her seriously. “Scout, courage isn’t a man with a gun in his hand. Courage is that knowing you will surely lose before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what happens,” he said. “Tom Robinson is a man who needs someone to stand up for him. He’s black, but it doesn’t mean he is guilty. We can’t judge (判断) a person by the colour of their skin, but by the quality of their character.”
Jem nodded, though he didn’t fully understand. Atticus continued, “Most people are good when you finally see them. But sometimes, they’re blinded by ignorance (无知). It’s our job to be kind, even when others aren’t.” That evening, Atticus spent hours reading books to them as usual. He didn’t shout or require respect. He won it through his words and actions.
Weeks later, when Atticus defended Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem watched quietly. They saw their father speak calmly and honestly, presenting evidence. Though the jury (陪审团) found Tom guilty in the end, Scout realized something important: Atticus defended Tom Robinson, not because it was easy, but because it showed justice (正义). She thought back to Atticus’s words about courage and knew her father was the bravest man she’d ever met.

April 23rd is World Book Day, which reminds people of the great value of reading. In China, national reading surveys show that more and more people are interested in reading. Different reading events are organized in many cities every year, attracting people to take part in them. All these facts show that reading has become a habit among people across the country.
Many foreign countries have taken actions to encourage national reading. In Belgium, almost every neighborhood has a public library, where teenagers can borrow books at no cost. Libraries hold story-telling activities and writer meetings every week, making reading more enjoyable. Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, famous as “World Book Capital”, has the most bookstores per person in the world. Reading is a favorite pastime there.
Why is reading so popular? In fact, it is more than just a personal hobby. It has a strong connection with a country’s development. It helps people gain wisdom and develop creativity, which pushes nations forward. For example, the four horse-themed mascots (吉祥物) for the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala were inspired by classic Chinese cultural relics (文物) and literary works. These designs mix traditional ideas of “energy” and “good luck” with modern styles. Reading helps to bring new life to traditional culture.
Also, reading develops our thinking skills. It trains us to watch, compare, analyze and think critically (批判地). Good reading habits make our brain more active. A study shows that teenagers who often read can have more creative ideas than those who don’t.
In short, reading can make a big difference to our personal growth and our nation’s future. It enriches personal minds, spreads our culture and helps our country move forward. Let us keep good reading habits and let books guide us to a better tomorrow.

【答案】
范文:
Small acts mean a lot
Great people not only make big achievements in their work, but also care about others and warm the world. As middle school students, we can also help by doing some small acts.
Last month, I helped an old lady carry heavy bags upstairs. She smiled and thanked me warmly. Another time, I picked up litter in our schoolyard. Though tired, I felt happy inside.
These small acts made me realize that kindness spreads easily. A simple help can brighten someone’s day. I also learned that we don’t need to do big things to make a difference. Small acts, like smiling or helping, can create a warmer world.
So let’s start with small acts. They may seem tiny, but together, they mean a lot.
