South Baltimore is often thought of as a place to avoid-people are taught to be careful of it.There was
a mass shooting this past July, and another in early September
"People think Curtis Bay is a dangerous place. It's not. It's just we're surrounded by dangerous things,"
says Taysia Thompson,17.
Taysia,is one of the Free Your Voice members,a group of student activists fighting against a very
different kind of danger in their neighborhood:air pollution and climate change. Now,the focus of their
movement is the mountains of coal.Coal releases a fine, black dust small enough to get into people's lungs.
It makes respiratory()diseases worse,or can even cause disease and premature death. And there are
the greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned.
The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent():the massive goods transportation
company CSX,which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021.The
goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate,or at least require
the company to enclose all the coal,or at the very least put water onto all of it so there's less dust blowing
around.
This past summer,Taysia and three other students spent their time gathering evidence to try and get the
coal pollution out of their neighborhood. They used sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the
neighborhood to prove that the dust is from coal. They are also sending dust samples to a scientist in
California, who uses an electron microscope to compare the dust that's in this neighborhood to samples from
the piles of coal at the terminal in South Baltimore to see if it matches.
The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been
very satisfying."Everyone is just breathing the air.And we will keep fighting."says Taysia.
24.Why are the mass shootings mentioned at the beginning?
A.To give an example.
B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To justify an assumption.
D.To pose a contrast.
25.What is the minimum goal the teens of Free Your Voice hope to achieve?
A.Scientists will use a microscope to examine the dust samples.
B.Officials will refuse the company CSX the operation permit.
C.State regulators will keep fighting against pollution.
D.The company CSX will reduce dust by watering the coal.
26.What can be inferred about the students'campaign?
A.They stopped the coal transport.
B.It isn't all plain sailing
C.The community turned against them.
D.The teens lack solid evidence.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Teens Fight Against Coal Pollution
B.A Dangerous Place to Avoid
C.How to Stop Mass Shootings
D.The Health Effects of Coal Dust

Imagine going to bed at 2AM with a 6 AM alarm. You may expect a day of aching eyes and clouded
thoughts, but is it possible to wake up feeling clear-headed and positive? We live in a world obsessed with
the golden 8 hours of sleep. But what if the secret to feeling refreshed has little to do with how much we have
actually slept?A wave of new research suggests that,in many cases, the way we think about sleep matters
more than the hours we get.
To test this,a UCLA study tracked 249 people with depression for 13 weeks, comparing their actual
sleep time with their self-reports.The mismatch between the two sets of data was striking. Many people
claimed they had slept terribly but the objective data showed otherwise.Interestingly, when participants
performed cognitive()tests,it was the self-reported sleep quality that predicted their performance, rather
than the objective sleep data.In other words, the belief that they had slept badly weakened their thinking the
next day more than the sleep itself.
This phenomenon, where beliefs create real physical effects,is similar to the placebo effect(
)In a 2021 experiment, researchers secretly adjusted clocks. Those who thought they slept 8 hours but
only got 5 performed better on reaction-time tests than those who got hours but thought they slept 5.Brain
scans confirmed that believing they slept well reduced"sleep drive"signals, making them more clear-headed
and energetic.
So,how can we control this"sleep mindset"?Researcher Nicole Tang found that the quality of our sleep
changes based on our daytime experiences. In her study, people who engaged in positive physical activity
during the day tended to rate their previous night's sleep as better, even if it was objectively poor. This
suggests that forcing yourself to exercise or stay active after a bad night's sleep can actually reshape your
memory of it.
Furthermore,practicing mindfulness,or questioning the rigid"8-hour rule"can foster a more positive
mindset. While getting enough sleep is ideal, knowing that your mindset matters might unlock greater energy,
resetting your brain for a clear and positive day.
28.What did the UCLA study find about people with depression?
A.Their actual sleep time was longer than they reported
B.Their thinking was mainly shaped by objective sleep data.
C.Believing they slept poorly hurt thinking more than actual sleep.
D.Their self-reported sleep quality was completely unreliable.
29.What can be inferred from Nicole Tang's finding?
A.Staying active after poor sleep helps people feel better.
B.Daytime experiences have little influence on sleep quality.
C.People's memory of sleep is always accurate.
D.Exercise can directly improve the actual duration of sleep.
30.What is the author's attitude toward the "8-hour rule"?
A.Supportive.
B.Critical.
C.Neutral.
D.Indifferent.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Our sleep mindset affects how refreshed we feel.
B.Day exercise can replace night sleep needs.
C.Actual sleep time is vital for mental health.
D.Depressed people often misreport their sleep.

Lithium-ion()batteries power everything from smartphones to electric cars and
renewable energy storage. However, lithium is insufficient and concentrated in limited regions. To
meet the growing demand for clean energy, scientists are exploring sodium-ion batteries as a sustainable
alternative.
Sodium, found in large quantities in seawater and salt mines,is cheaper and more widely available
than lithium.Yet,sodium-ion batteries face a major technical problem.Sodium-ions are three times
larger than lithium-ions,making them slower to move and harder to store within battery electrodes(
)This reduces energy density, meaning sodium batteries require larger sizes to match lithium's
capacity.Scientists are handling this challenge through new materials.
One focus is improving the anode (negative electrode).Traditional lithium batteries use
graphite(石墨),which struggles to store sodium.Scientists now use“hard carbon”,a porous material,
which allows sodium-ions to pass through its numerous tiny gaps.Adding tin to hard carbon further
boosts storage capacity. For the cathode(positive electrode),new materials like layered metal oxides
or organic compounds show promise. For example,a durable organic cathode named TAQ has achieved
high energy density and stability over thousands of charging cycles.
Recent progress is encouraging. Some commercial sodium batteries now store 170-200 watt-hours
per kilogram (Wh/kg),close to low-end lithium batteries (200-300Wh/kg).Major companies like
CATL in China plan large-scale production, targeting renewable energy storage and electric vehicles.
However, challenges remain.Even top sodium batteries still lag behind advanced lithium models
in performance.Falling lithium prices, driven by oversupply, and existing manufacturing
infrastructure(基f础设施)also weaken sodium's cost advantage.Experts emphasize the need for
breakthroughs, such as replacing expensive materials like vanadium.
Despite challenges, many believe sodium batteries have a bright future. As research advances, they
could become a key player in building a greener economy."We're still in the early days of
understanding sodium's chemistry,"says Dan Steingart,a battery chemist,"but the potential is
undeniable.”
32.Why is sodium considered a better resource than lithium?
A.It provides higher energy density.
B.It is simpler and safer to get.
C.It is more affordable and abundant.
D.It allows faster charging cycles
33.What does the underlined word "porous"mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Full of small holes.
B.Stable and rough.
C.Large in capacity.
D.Extremely dense.
34.Why is sodium's cost advantage currently limited?
A.Sodium batteries need rare materials for production.
B.Lithium prices have dropped greatly due to rich supply.
C.Global lithium reserves are sufficient for large-scale use.
D.Sodium batteries require complex manufacturing processes.
35.What is the main purpose ofthe text?
A.To criticize lithium batteries for their environmental harm.
B.To warn against relying on renewable energy storage.
C.To promote organic cathodes as an alternative solution.
D.To highlight sodium's potential despite current limitations.

When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed a financial exam, her heart sank.36
"Envy was eating me up,"recalls Eugenie. She was clearly filled with jealousy at that moment.37
"And I told her I failed and admitted I was green-eyed,"she says.Eugenie knew that being frank would ease
her envy and,but she was surprised that when she shifted her attitude, she could share her friend's happiness
and experience her own,in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person's good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, the great
joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it doesn't directly involve us.38 "Freudenfreude
is like a kind of social glue,"says Catherine Chambliss,a professor of psychology at Ursinus College."It
makes relationships closer and more enjoyable."This feeling is similar to positive empathy-the ability to
share someone else's joy.A study in 2021 examined freudenfreude's role in daily life and found that it could
encourage kind actions, like helping people. It could also improve life satisfaction, and even help people
cooperate during conflicts.
39 However,we seldom pay enough attention to their happy moments. In fact, how we react
to our friends'joy is even more important than how we respond to their suffering.Too often,we think of joy
passively. We see it as something that comes to us,instead of something we can produce. While it can be

difficult in practice, freudenfreude can lift us up and brighten our day.40
A.But anyway she congratulated her friend.
B.She had failed the same test weeks earlier.
C.So celebrating our friends'success is a win-win to us all.
D.Sharing our failures with friends often brings us closer together.
E.This positive emotion plays a key role in human communication.
F.Envy is a common emotion, but it can be transformed into admiration.
G.Too often,we think our friends need us most during their hard times:a job loss, getting divorced.

unexpected consequence.Emma had 44 taken herself as a crane and become deeply attached to
humans. She 45 to live with male cranes, and even had a 46 for killing some of them,
making it impossible for her to become a mother.
47,the two zookeepers didn't want to see the extinction of this precious species. With
their patience and efforts, they successfully developed a 48 of artificial breeding and natural
reproduction. This 49 Emma to give birth to five baby cranes.
The two keepers are proud. But more efforts must be made, because the population of the crane in the

First,,Finally,Through this
Dear Peter,
Glad to know that you are interested in the English Drama Competition held in our school last week,
I'm writing to share something with you.
To prepare for it,our team chose to perform a scene from Romeo and Juliet.Every day after school,
we practiced lines together and discussed how to act better. Finally, the big day came. When we stepped
onto the stage,I was a little nervous at first, but seeing my classmates encouraging smiles,I soon calmed
down.We tried our best to show the emotions of the characters, and the audience cheered loudly for us after
our performance.
Through this competition, not only did I improve my spoken English but also understood the
importance of teamwork.Everyone in our group worked hard and helped each other, which made me
realize that unity is strength.
How about your school life recently?I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
