Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) conducts an annual student Essay Contest to encourage the study and appreciation of Jane Austen’s works in new generations of readers.
2025 Contest Topic
2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. The theme for our annual general meeting is “No check to my genius from beginning to end” a joking remark from one of her letters. This has suggested the prompt (提示) for our contest this year, which is to choose something in Austen’s novels — a particular word, a repeated situation or theme, perhaps a symbol or activity — and then choose two scenes (they may be from the same novel or different ones) where she employs the chosen “something” in contrasting or complementary ways. Explain the different roles it plays and why Austen uses them as she does. What point is she trying to make? Does she succeed? In conclusion, explain what led to your choice.

Travis Jonker, a school librarian and writer, takes ideas from everyday life to create touching stories. His new book — The Ship in the Window, is about Mabel, a brave little mouse with big dreams. Mabel lives in a cabin by a lake with a boy and his father. She loves the father’s model ship and dreams of an adventure with it. One night, she decides to try the ship on the water.
The story looks at why we keep some things only to look at instead of using them. Through Mabel’s actions, it asks if it’s better to share and use what we value. The father, who first wants to keep the ship safe, changes and works together with his son and Mabel. This change is the heart of the story.
Jonker’s message about embracing change and sharing experiences is something everyone can understand. It shows the balance between keeping things safe and using them to connect with others. Even though Mabel’s adventure doesn’t go as planned, it changes her world in a big way.
The book has lovely pictures but more details about the art would improve this review. Also, discussing the story’s speed and tone would help readers understand how it is appropriate for kids.
In summary, The Ship in the Window is a sweet story for kids and adults. Its themes of adventure, sharing, and change remind us of the happiness that comes from trying new things. This touching book is perfect for families and teachers looking for meaningful children’s stories.

C. Adventure is only for those who are brave enough.
D. Keeping things safe is more valuable than using them.
6. What does the author think of Jonker’s book?
A. Objective and plain. B. Inspiring and meaningful.

7. What is the text?
A. A biography. B. A news report. C. A book review. D. A children’s story.

Scientists found more than 600 different viruses after examining people’s toothbrushes and showerheads — but thankfully, most of them are more helpful than harmful.
Northwestern microbiologist Erica Hartmann, lead author of a new study published in Frontiers in Microbiomes, was quite shocked and interested when discovering that these everyday objects were full of bacteria-eating viruses known as bacteriophages (噬菌体). “There is so much about the world around us that we don’t understand — including the things that may seem familiar”, she explained. “We started out looking at things like toothbrushes and showerheads because they are important sources of microbes (微生物) that we’re exposed to, but we don’t know which microbes they carry or what factors influence them.”
The latest study was an update to the Northwestern team’s 2021 project “Operation Pottymouth”, which focused on studying the sources of the bacteria found on toothbrushes. Though there were quite large numbers of types among the more than 600 bacteriophage samples, a type that kills illness-causing mycobacteria (分枝杆菌) was slightly more common than any other, Hartmann said. Given that mycobacteria can cause serious infections, it’s a good thing that viruses killing them were present as well.
“Not only did we find different bacteriophages on toothbrushes and showerheads, but we also found different bacteriophages on each toothbrush and each showerhead.” the microbiologist said. Bacteriophages have in recent years been studied and used as treatments for bacterial infections, especially those hard to treat. While Hartmann insists these findings are attractive in themselves, knowing that they may be used in medical treatments makes them much more useful. “It could be,” she said, “that the next great medicine will be based on something that grew on your toothbrush.” While that’s not exactly pleasant to think about, it certainly sounds a lot better than leaving a mycobacterial infection untreated.
8. What made Hartmann feel shocked?
A. Numerous viruses on daily necessities. B. Terrifying toothbrushes in everyday life.
C. Bacteriophages killing various microbes. D. Surrounding things confusing us humans.
9. Why did the scientists study toothbrushes and showerheads lately?
A. To test the accuracy of their former research. B. To look into the microbes on common objects.
C. To improve the safety level of related products. D. To seek the treatments of some deadly diseases.
10. What can be inferred according to the text?
A. Bacteriophages may lead to a new medicine.
B. Mycobacterial infections can hardly be treated.
C. The majority of bacteriophages are of little value.
D. Different toothbrushes carry the same bacteriophages.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Mycobacteria can probably cause diseases. B. Scientists show great interest in toothbrushes.
C. Scientists are uncovering the secrets of infections. D. Viruses on everyday objects possess medical value.
D
Online shopping often involves endless options and discounts. A single search for running shoes can yield hundreds of results across multiple platforms, each promising the “best deal”. The holiday season brings excitement, but it also brings decision exhaustion and nightmares. What if there were a tool capable of hunting for the best prices, navigating endless sales, and making sure your purchases arrive on time?
The next evolution in artificial intelligence is AI agents that are capable of autonomous reasoning and problem-solving. Unlike traditional recommendation engines, AI agents learn your preferences and handle tasks autonomously. The agents are built with machine learning and natural language processing. They learn from their interactions with the people using them and become smarter and more efficient over time from their collective interactions. Looking ahead, AI agents are likely to not only master personal shopping needs but also negotiate directly with corporate AI systems. They will not only learn your preferences but will likely be able to book tailored experiences, handle payments across platforms, and coordinate schedules.
But can AI truly learn your preferences? A recent study using the GPT-4o model achieved 85% accuracy in imitating the thoughts and behaviors of over 1,000 people after they interacted with the AI for just two hours. This breakthrough finding suggests that digital agents can understand and act on people’s preferences in ways that will transform the shopping experience.
AI agents are moving beyond recommendations to autonomously perform complex tasks such as automating refunds, managing inventory (存货) and approving pricing decisions. This evolution has already begun to reshape how businesses operate and how consumers interact with them.
Retailers using AI agents are seeing measurable benefits. Since October 2024, data from the Salesforce shopping index reveals that digital retailers using generative AI achieved a 7%increase in average order revenue (收益) and attributed 17% of global orders to AI-driven personalized recommendations, targeted promotions and improved customer service. Meanwhile, the nature of search and advertising is undergoing a major shift. Meanwhile, AI-powered search tools deliver instant, context-aware responses, challenging traditional search engines and forcing advertisers to rethink their strategies.
12. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Online shopping is widely preferred. B. Online shopping causes choice overload.
C. Qualities of goods online can be promised. D. The holiday season witnesses more discounts.
13. How can the AI agents know the demands of customers?
A. They learn it by interacting with customers. B. They are informed literally by the customers.
C. They negotiate directly with consumers in need. D. They are originally equipped with such a service.
14. Which is a contributing factor to retailers’ increasing earnings?
A. The autonomy of AI in completing complex tasks.
B. The smooth payments and improved service of AI.
C. The quick responses of AI to handle retailers’ problems.
D. The tailored experience AI offered in the whole process.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Agents Are Enjoying Great Popularity. B. Online Shopping Is Experiencing a Revolution.
C. AI Agents Are Lightening Your Purchasing Load. D. Online Shopping Challenges the Offline Shopping.

Our ten-year-old son, Eric, was a happy but hyperactive (多动症) child. Although he was quite bright and had a warm spirit with a bright smile lighting up his face, he had learning difficulties in focusing on reading and writing. He struggled with understanding instructions or remembering new information, causing him to fall behind in class. The psychologist did the tests that showed he liked animals, so we took in two rabbits, hoping that caring for them would improve his condition.
One Sunday morning, a warm little hand urgently patted my cheek. “Mom, wake up! There’s a big storm. We have to bring in Bucket and Captain!” Instinctively, I reached for my husband, Larry, but he was on a business trip.
I turned on the light. Eric leaped up on the bed to peek through the curtains. The window was covered with driving snow. “Let’s go, Mom. We have to save them!”
We stuffed ourselves into some winter clothes and hurried to the yard. Eric went charging out into the snow-filled darkness to the rabbit hutches. “You get Captain,” he shouted through the howling wind, already holding Bucket, a white male rabbit, back to the house. I dragged Captain from the cage into the room and surprisingly found that Eric was busy preparing something. His face was serious and focused without noticing that the rabbit was eating the telephone cord (电话线).
Soon, the rabbits bounced around playfully, feeding on fresh vegetables. Eric took a moment to observe their behaviors and gently touched their fur, whispering southing words of comfort. He also got the rabbits to rest in a nest made of towels and blankets in front of the fireplace and even read them his favorite books. Time seemed to have stood still.
Larry returned ahead of time, “What is going on here?”, staring at Eric. “I got worried when I couldn’t reach you, so I caught an earlier flight,” he explained. “Did you know the phone is out of order?”

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened.

The book has lovely pictures, but more details about the art would improve this review. Also, discussing the story’s speed and tone would help readers understand how it is appropriate for kids.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. D

Online shopping often involves endless options and discounts. A single search for running shoes can yield hundreds of results across multiple platforms each promising the “best deal”.

Additionally, upgraded schools and hospitals have enhanced people’s quality of life. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened.

【答案】 Eric rushed to Larry and told him what had happened. His eyes were wide with excitement as he recounted the stormy adventure. “Dad, it was so scary! The snow was so thick, but we saved Bucket and Captain,” Eric babbled. Larry listened attentively, his initial confusion replaced by a warm smile. “You did a great job, son. Taking care of the rabbits in such a tough situation shows how much you’ve grown,” Larry praised. Eric beamed with pride, his cheeks flushed. Then, they laughed together about the chewed-up phone cord, with Eric promising to be more careful next time.
With days passing by, Eric had a big change. In school, he no longer fidgeted in his seat. His teachers were amazed at his new-found ability to focus during lessons. At home, he became more organized. He made a schedule for feeding and cleaning the rabbits, and even started to help with other household chores. His reading improved as he often read aloud to the rabbits. Moreover, his social skills blossomed. He shared stories about the rabbits with his classmates, making more friends.
